Selling from Türkiye to Russia on Ozon Global: how sellers describe the route
From account setup to customs, commission and the payout floor — what Turkish sellers and the Ozon Global Türkiye team say, contradictions included.
Built from what sellers say on camera: Turkish sellers shipping to Russia through Ozon Global, the Ozon Global Türkiye team in interviews, and one seller who tried it for a year and closed her account in the red. None of it is official Ozon documentation, and the accounts sometimes contradict each other. Each figure is tagged with source and period; Ozon changes commissions, tariffs and partners often.
What Ozon Global means for a Turkish seller
Ozon is one of Russia's largest marketplaces; Ozon Global is the arm that opens it to sellers abroad. The founding date is disputed: one seller video says Moscow, 2010, while the General Manager of Ozon Global Türkiye says in two interviews it started in 1998 as an online bookstore.
Scale figures depend on recording date: 30-plus categories, 370 million-plus listings and 56.5 million active buyers (sponsored video); 67 million unique buyers last quarter (Türkiye team); 55–60 million monthly visitors and 26–27 orders a year per loyal customer (the GM). Don't stack these together.
The model was one thing: stock stays in Türkiye and ships order by order — "we are broadly a dropshipping system," in the GM's words. There was then no Russian warehouse for Turkish sellers; a fulfilment warehouse via Baku was in preparation, Russian-side storage was "next year." Russia is the main market, Azerbaijan is open, and CIS countries such as Uzbekistan and Georgia are growing.
Setup: from account to first stock entry
Registration is free, through the Türkiye domain. No individual accounts: a sole proprietorship, limited or joint-stock company is required. Steps, as shown on screen by the Türkiye team:
- Registration country must be Türkiye — everything follows from it.
- "Registration number" means the tax ID, not a national ID, and cannot be changed later.
- Trade name must match the bank account.
- Payment details: TR IBAN, USD, the bank's SWIFT code. Wrong here and the store is not approved.
- Approval within 24 hours of the tax-certificate upload; the same team elsewhere puts application to sale-ready at about two weeks, mostly listings and logistics.
- No stock without a logistics method — listed products do not go on sale. You define a warehouse address, a 1–5 day handling window and public holidays.
- Returns: free automatic destruction, or return through a partner. At the time only one option (GBS return) worked for Turkish sellers.
- Tariff example: the "extra small" channel takes items up to 500 g, invoice under 80 dollars, 60x60 maximum, no batteries; from 0.81 dollars plus 0.005 per gram. That video's example is internally inconsistent — order of magnitude only.
- Listings in Russian: title, description and any text on images. Two videos agree.
Shipping and customs: who does what
The seller's job is narrow: pack, invoice, and drop the parcel at the partner's collection point or have it collected. No separate contracts, no rate negotiation — tariffs are fixed, the partner is picked in the panel, and Ozon acts as guarantor through a ticket if one deviates. Partner counts run four to five by video; the GM names Navlungo. Collection centres are in Istanbul and Izmir, drop-off points also in Ankara, Kayseri, Gaziantep and Konya, with tariffs reportedly flat across Türkiye.
The seller does not clear customs. Per an Ozon Global Türkiye broadcast, the logistics partner files the Electronic Commerce Customs Declaration (ETGB) on the seller's behalf for every shipment, carrying product name, price and origin. The quoted price is end to end, customs included, with no extra charge when end-user documents are requested; electronics and some categories can require safety paperwork such as MSDS.
The accounting burden is the seller's: a sales invoice per order, type "exempt" (the source of the micro-export VAT exemption), a customs tariff code, the customer's Russian name and address translated into English, and eleven 1s in the national ID field. The invoice goes to the partner's portal; the ETGB appears about a month later, in time for month-end accounting.
Transit times come in two versions. One broadcast gives 3–6 days to Moscow by air (about 5 on average), a week to ten days beyond Moscow, and just over two weeks by road, with up to six flights a week from Istanbul. Another gives a week to twelve days by air, about three weeks by road. Different periods.
Money: commission, currency and the payout floor
Commission claims disagree, and the disagreement is about dates:
| Claim | Source | Period marker |
|---|---|---|
| Flat 5% for all Turkish sellers; 15–20% elsewhere, up to 40% | Ozon Global Türkiye commercial team | "Since last September" — video titled 2026 |
| 7–20% by category | The GM, two interviews | As the Türkiye office neared its third year |
| 5% is not the real cost: plus ~2% Russia-side, bank fees, logistics and overheads — budget ~20% | Independent seller | After commission dropped to 5% |
The same seller says other charges rose as commission fell: free analytics tools moved into Premium and Premium Plus packages, and a brand-document approval fee appeared that most sellers, he thinks, will not pay. The other way: Ozon funds discounts from its own budget — "we cut the floor price you set by close to 30%, today's total is 33%", says the GM, with seasonal discounts of at least 15–20%.
Payouts are dollar-denominated — even a seller taking lira has the calculation done in dollars, and one video says you pick ruble or dollar at signup. The clock starts on delivery, payouts run fortnightly, and a 1,000-dollar threshold applies that the GM will not lower; shipping on day one rather than day five therefore affects cash flow directly. On currency, her only concrete point is that the ruble strengthening against the dollar visibly accelerated sales; her lira/ruble figures are unclear in the auto-captions, so I am not repeating them.
What sellers warn about
One video is negative throughout and also the most concrete. A cosmetics brand owner closed her account in debt after a year:
- Price fell to one dollar despite the minimum she had set, and orders arrived at that price.
- Promotions cost heavily without bringing sales.
- The ad budget grew as sales grew.
- A best-seller's stock was burned through by one-dollar orders.
- The drop spread over two or three days, so by day three it has happened.
- She could not reach Turkish-speaking support, and the answers were not useful.
That contradicts the Ozon Türkiye team's account of a Turkish panel, Turkish support, an Istanbul office and weekly webinars. From complaint sites she relays a seller unpaid for two years, account restrictions, warehouse blocks, and a warning that thinly capitalised sellers can go under. She still does not say stay away — enter with few products, small stock and higher prices, and watch the ad panel daily.
Opposite sits the Ozon Türkiye team's claim: no permanent account block, no seizure of funds, no suspension even when the relationship ends. The two do not reconcile; I leave both standing.
Logistics has one concrete break. Unit Trade, the most-used logistics company here, was shut down by Ozon after complaints about lost and stolen goods it would not answer for. Replacements carry a narrower range and weaker panels — confirm the partner takes your product type, or goods return from customs and you cancel.
Ozon's own side does not claim everything is smooth. The GM calls it "a system that works without problems 95% of the time", warns against making Ozon a first e-commerce attempt, and blames mispricing — assuming foreign currency is easy money — for most failures. Returns are rare, cancellations are not, and re-importing returns is expensive: hence the overseas warehouse plan. She cites 3,000 active sellers against 5,000 a month signing up and being deleted. After sanctions reached banks on 22 December 2023, about 30% of sellers saw payout delays from January: money leaves Ozon on time but sticks in Turkish banks' compliance. Over 70 people were assigned to it; sellers are asked to switch banks.
Short summary
- Dropshipping: stock in Türkiye, shipped per order. No Russian warehouse at the time.
- A company is required; micro-export incentives exclude sole proprietorships — a Turkish rule, not Ozon's.
- No stock without a logistics method; listing is not going on sale.
- The logistics partner clears customs and files the ETGB; the seller invoices VAT-exempt per order.
- Commission claims conflict: 5%, 7–20% by category, ~20% effective. Verify yours in the panel.
- Payouts: dollars, fortnightly, after delivery, 1,000-dollar floor.
- The clearest risk: discounting and ad spend eating the margin together.
