Returns, damage and disputes on Ozon: the money that leaks after the sale
Who pays for each return type, where returned stock goes, how sellers claim for lost or swapped goods, and the deadlines that decide it.
The money is not earned when the sale closes. The buyer may never collect the parcel, may return it afterwards, the goods may vanish in the warehouse, or something else may turn up in their place. What follows comes from sellers and Ozon's training videos, not Ozon documentation; tariffs move often, so each figure carries its period.
Return types and who pays the bill
Ozon's own training video on unit economics ties three events to one cost line: a return (возврат), a cancellation (отмена) and a non-collection (невыкуп). All three produce reverse logistics, and the definition is precise: the charge equals the tariff for delivery to the buyer, but without the average-delivery-time coefficient. On top of that, 15 roubles are withheld for a return through a partner pickup point, and the video says plainly that you cannot influence this charge.
A seller walkthrough explains those 15 roubles: the return-handling fee (обработка возврата) was 50 roubles and was abolished, yet it still shows in accounting documents, because handling at a partner point costs 15. The same video adds what matters more: reverse logistics is always calculated without the localisation index, so the discount earned by spreading stock across warehouses never applies to the return leg. Another seller flags a rule introduced quietly in May — refusal before handover still leaves the last mile with the seller.
| Event | What the seller pays |
|---|---|
| Non-collection, cancellation | Reverse logistics = outbound tariff, no delivery-time factor |
| Return via a partner pickup point | Extra 15 roubles handling |
| Refusal before handover | Last mile, still on the seller |
| Defective goods on realFBS | The buyer's shipping cost |
| Rejected return on realFBS | Shipping the item back at own cost |
One seller put the legal frame to support directly: distance selling is governed by the consumer protection act, which recognises no non-returnable category. Ozon's page excepts only made-to-order goods and the Ozon Card.
realFBS is the one scheme where the seller decides. Ozon's official video lists four tools: partial compensation that keeps the sale, repeatable at a higher amount; a refund without taking the goods back, avoiding an item that cannot be resold or is worth less than the logistics; a request for inspection; or a reasoned rejection. The buyer may then dispute (спор) within five days, and Ozon decides.
Where a returned item goes
A video built from roughly 8,000 seller comments quotes the rule in support's words: the pickup point must accept a return if the item visually matches the buyer's photo. The verdict is blunt — the moment it does, the seller has already lost. Then the queue: returns are prepared in order of arrival and every warehouse has 65 days from the request date.
The clock runs while you wait. FBS returns must be collected quickly, or they go into paid storage and then disposal. On realFBS you have 14 days to collect a postal return; miss it and Ozon disposes of it while the money returns to the buyer automatically. Disposal has its own price — one breakdown gives 75 roubles per unit, with the caveat "if nothing has changed by now". Pulling stock out is also paid.
Not all of it is thrown away: in 2025 Ozon began taking FBS returns and cancellations with no quality complaint into its warehouses for resale. The seller reporting it is unhappy — returns are now pushed back to the seller, where before Ozon judged them.
Lost, damaged and swapped goods: how sellers claim
Everything turns on the acceptance act (акт приёмки). In an FBO supply walkthrough the sorting-centre employee scans the box's barcode, takes it and hands over no document at all, which is why the presenter films the handover. The boxes are opened and counted at the warehouse, and the act shows declared quantity beside quantity received. Then the deadline: untouched, the act self-approves in five days and cannot be disputed after that.
Even then the door is narrow. The commonest scenario: you ship ten boxes, nine are accepted, one is not found, the act is issued. Review requires a video of the packing; with no video there is no review, and warehouses that once supplied their own acceptance recordings no longer do. The central sentence: on Ozon there is no presumption of innocence — if you cannot prove you shipped it, you are at fault by default.
There is a trap here. Ozon's unit-economics video recommends trusted acceptance (доверительная приёмка) to avoid the acceptance charge; the seller compilation says that with it there is no compensation at all, even holding video.
The compilation names the routes: a ticket under «ФБО, списанные товары» to contest a write-off, «ФБС, проблемы после отгрузки» for problems after dispatch. The template is five lines: supply number, what happened, the damage, the exact amount, what you want and by when. The evidence routine matches it — video of every packing session kept 60 days, with article number, barcode, contents and sealing in frame.
Swapped goods are their own line. A producer-seller gives swaps and losses as her third reason for shipping in small boxes: she bought back two of her own items that had long shown as unavailable, both turned out to be swaps, and she had been paying storage on them.
What Ozon will not pay is written down too. A video translating the July 2026 announcements reports that loss or damage from military action, a counter-terrorist operation, a state of emergency, shelling or civil disorder is the seller's entrepreneurial risk, compensated by neither Ozon nor insurers. Where Ozon itself is insured, payment comes only after its own insurer has paid. The same text calls Ozon a logistics platform, where warehouse time is an intermediate stage of delivery rather than storage — so what is the storage fee for?
The deadlines
These belong to the period when the videos were recorded; Ozon changes them often.
| Window | What for |
|---|---|
| 5 days | Signing the acceptance act; untouched, it self-approves |
| 5 days | Buyer may dispute a rejected return (realFBS) |
| 7 days | Buyer ships an item requested for inspection |
| 14 days | Return in transit; beyond it the buyer may dispute |
| 31 days | Still in transit, and a dispute opens automatically |
| 14 days | Collecting a postal return, else disposal and refund |
| 65 days | Warehouse window to prepare a return |
| 60 days | Sellers' own rule: keep shipment videos this long |
Budgeting returns into the price
A unit-economics spreadsheet walkthrough, updated March 2024, puts returns in three places. On the buying side the defect allowance joins the purchasing-commission column: 5% buying commission plus 1% for defects. Then the reverse-logistics row, equal to the outbound tariff with no localisation index. Third and most important, the multiplier: a hundred orders come in, twenty are cancelled or returned, so the buyout rate is 80%. In the hairdryer example, at an assumed 90%, logistics come to 358 roubles per unit.
Several sellers use the same formula: (1 − buyout rate) × logistics. There is a real operating structure too — a start-from-zero walkthrough gives the split on 100,000 roubles of monthly turnover: 14% commission, 10% delivery, 35% promotion, 4% returns and cancellations, 1.5% packaging. For facts rather than estimates, two videos point at one report in the cabinet's analytics: «Начисление компенсации по товарам».
Finally, the hidden price: the return rate is a ranking factor, and one card-diagnostics list gives the threshold outright — above 10%, the description differs from the product or there are defects. Reducing returns beats financing them: check the batch before shipping, and answer the reviews. In one case, explaining that the buyer had assembled the product wrongly got the review deleted and the return cancelled.
Short summary
- Returns, cancellations and non-collections share one cost line: reverse logistics, at the outbound tariff, with no localisation discount.
- A partner pickup point adds 15 roubles; refusal before handover still leaves the last mile with the seller.
- There is no non-returnable category; only made-to-order goods and the Ozon Card are excepted.
- The acceptance act self-approves in five days and the right to dispute closes with it; review needs video.
- An uncollected return goes to paid storage, then disposal — one video quotes 75 roubles per unit.
- Returns enter the price three times: defect allowance, reverse-logistics row, buyout rate as multiplier.
- Past a 10% return rate the problem is the card itself, and it shows in ranking.
Most of these become report rows once you track return rate and reverse-logistics share per card — what the Ozon panel in Commbot watches.
